Excursions around Lake Chiemsee

It looks majestic. The Herrenchiemsee Castle on the eponymous island in Lake Chiemsee. The fairytale Bavarian King Ludwig II had it built in the 19th century and it was modelled on Versailles. With extensive gardens - simply regal. One of the few buildings on the island is the Augustinian Canons' Monastery, which is also worth seeing.

Just a short boat ride further lies the Fraueninsel island with its famous Benedictine convent Frauenwörth. There are potteries and a fishery there - and two lime trees that are over 1,000 years old. Tip: If you are there during the winter, visit the Christmas Market on the Fraueninsel.

Off to the city

If you wish to go to a city then you’ll have the choice of 2 famous cities. For shopping or sightseeing - or both.

Salzburg (approx. 60 km away): From the Hohensalzburg Fortress you’ll have the best view of Mozart’s city. You can also visit Mozart's birthplace, Salzburg’s cathedral quarter and Mirabell Palace. Stroll through the ‘Getreidegasse’ with its remarkable house portals. You'll also be in the right place for shopping. Still got some time? The Haus der Natur (Museum of Natural Sciences) and Salzburg’s Hellbrunn Zoo would be perfect for families.
Munich (approx. 100 km away): If you take an excursion to Munich then, in the city centre, be sure not miss the Marienplatz, the Viktualienmarkt (food market), the Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Dear Lady) with its two striking towers and the Residenz. For relaxation head to the English Garden or the park at Nymphenburg Palace. Just outside of the city are the Bavaria Filmstadt and the Jochen Schweizer Arena.
