Winter holiday in the Chiemgau region

Sparkling winter moments

Winter in the Chiemgau region has a quieter, more peaceful charm. It’s a season that emphasizes coziness and care, offering countless ways to embrace the magic of winter. From serene walks through snowy landscapes to the warmth and joy of festive Christmas markets, there’s so much to enjoy.

Step into the winter wonderland.

When the first snow falls in Marquartstein, excitement fills the air. Children rush to build snowmen or zoom down slopes on their toboggans, while the crisp winter landscape beckons everyone outdoors.

What would be your favorite way to spend a winter holiday in the Chiemgau?

Skiing in Bavaria - Landhotel Weßner Hof

Skiing in Bavaria

In the Chiemgau region, the skiing areas are not far away. About 15 to 30 minutes by car. In the ski area around Reit im Winkl, you can whizz down the slopes on around 43 kilometres of pistes. In the Hochfelln ski area, there are a further 11 kilometres for skiers and snowboarders and, in Ruhpolding, another 7 kilometres of downhill runs.

For families, we recommend the Benzeck ski area in Reit im Winkl and the Kesselalm ski area in Inzell.

In Reit im Winkl there's even an extra snow tubing lift for extra fun in winter when the skis take a break.

Cross-country skiing in the Chiemgau region

When you glide through the vastness of the Alpine foothills on cross-country skis it feels like you’re part of the winter landscape. In the Chiemgau region there are 400 kilometres of classic cross-country trails and 300 kilometres of trails for skating. You can enter the Achental cross-country skiing trail directly in Marquartstein. It runs from Grassau via Marquartstein to Schleching. You don't have to do the 32 km cross-country tour right away, but just as much as you like. Of course, there are also shorter trails, such as the 2.4 km long one in Oberfeld. Here’s another tip - Ruhpolding, only 30 km away, is the venue for the Biathlon World Cup. Where the world's elite compete in January, in the Chiemgau Arena, biathlon taster courses are otherwise offered in winter.

Winter hiking

The clear air frees your mind. If you wrap up warmly then you can really enjoy this. Trekking through the snow when there is enough of it and the winter sun is shining. For winter hiking, the path from the valley station in Marquartstein through the forest up to the mountain station is recommended. From the top of the Weidenau high plateau you’ll have an amazing view of the winter landscape of the Alpine foothills. Walk on a little further up here still to the cleared mountain forest adventure trail.

Of course, there are also beautiful winter hiking tours in the valley, for example, along the Tyrolean Ache river.. The 10 km stage on the Richard Strauss High Trail from Maquartstein Castle has an ascent at the beginning, otherwise it is rather flat. Or, in winter, you can take a walk along the shore of Lake Chiemsee, which is only 10 km away. As you can see, we can think of a number of things.

And, after a winter hike, perhaps a massage? Make an appointment in good time.

Tobogganing in Marquartstein - Landhotel Weßner Hof

Tobogganing in Marquartstein

Yay! With a toboggan you can really pick up speed in the snow. And then take the bend. The toboggan run on the Hochplatte mountain is pretty fast in some places - that’s why small children should not toboggan alone. If you have tobogganing skills then you'll love the approx. 3.5 kilometre long natural toboggan run from the Staffn-Alm down into the valley.

Another go? The easiest way up is with the Hochplatte cable car. From the mountain station it’s not far to the Staffn-Alm, the starting point. You’d prefer to walk up? With the toboggan you can walk from the valley station to the Staffn-Alm in about 75 minutes.

You can rent toboggans at the valley station for a fee. Please note that the Hochplatte cable car and the toboggan run are not open continuously in winter.

Fairytale
Christmas markets - Landhotel Weßner Hof

Fairytale
Christmas markets

Christmas market on an island? The Christmas market on the Fraueninsel is one of the highlights of a winter holiday at Lake Chiemsee. Sailing from Prien/Stock harbour to the Fraueninsel in winter is in itself already an experience - especially in the evening when the Christmas lights are twinkling. The Christmas market takes place on the first two Advent weekends.

But we also like to stroll around the Advent markets in Tüssling, Halsbach and elsewhere in the Chiemgau region. Lovingly decorated booths, fine arts and crafts and Christmas music put us in a pre-Christmas mood.

By the way, on the first Advent weekend, there’s also a small Christmas market in the Marquartstein spa park - the Marquartstein Advent Garden.
