Holiday in the Chiemgau region

Where it's lovely

What makes our home region so special? The breathtaking scenery of the Chiemgau Alps, the historic Marquartstein Castle, and the Tyrolean Ache river, winding its way from Tyrol to the famous Lake Chiemsee. This river gave the valley its name – Achental.

But it’s not just the landscape; it’s also the people who shape this valley and the Chiemgau region. Did you know that composer Richard Strauss lived in Marquartstein and wrote many of his symphonies here, including the iconic Alpine Symphony?

Countryside. Panoramas. Tranquility.

During your holiday in the Chiemgau, take time to savor the beauty of the mountain landscapes. Rest on a bench, listen to the hum of bees, or enjoy fresh buttermilk on a mountain pasture. Let nature’s charm captivate you. From here, your gaze stretches into neighboring Austria, toward the Lofer Rocky Mountains and even the majestic High Tauern range. The mountains offer peace and strength—don’t you agree?

Mountains & Landmarks - Landhotel Weßner Hof

Mountains & Landmarks

Staffen, Kampenwand and Hochplatte are names that you’ll frequently hear when you stay with us. The Hochplatte is our local mountain, 1,568 metres high. The mountain railway runs from Marquartstein up to an altitude of 1,040 metres to the "Weidenau" high plateau.

Right opposite is the Staffen mountain, which is entirely forested, and the cliffs of the 1,669 m high Kampenwand mountain. It is the most popular photo motif in winter as well as in summer. By the way, the Kampenwand is the landmark of the Chiemgau Alps and has the largest summit cross in Bavaria - it’s even lit up.

To see it all, stay overnight with us at the Weßner Hof during your Chiemgau holiday,

Chiemgau Lakes - Landhotel Weßner Hof

Chiemgau Lakes

While we’re on the subject of landmarks, on the one hand, the Chiemgau region has a mountainous and hilly landscape. On the other hand, the many lakes characterise the Chiemgau region, indeed, you could also call it the Chiemgau lake district. The largest lake of them all is Lake Chiemsee, which is also a real landmark of our home area. It acts as a sort of midpoint for the Chiemgau region, which stretches about 50 km north and south of Lake Chiemsee - all the way to the Austrian border.

During your family holiday, you’re bound to make an excursion to Lake Chiemsee from the hotel, too. It’s only 10 km to Lake Chiemsee.
